진주시는 지난해 6월 소속 교수와 학생 20여명이 기업가정신을 배우기 위해 진주 K-기업가정신센터를 방문했던 콜럼버스 주립대가 올해도 지난 4일부터 5일까지 1박 2일간 진주를 찾았다고 밝혔다. 콜럼버스 주립대학교는 미국 조지아주 콜럼버스에 위치한 4년제 공립대학교다.
올해는 지난해에 이어 스튜어트 레이필드 콜럼버스 주립대 총장을 위시해 패트릭 도나호 콜럼버스 주립대 최고운영책임자, 에릭 스피어스 국제협력처장, 이대우 정치학과 교수, 학생 등 14명이 진주를 찾아 기업가정신에 높은 관심을 드러냈다.
특히 대표단은 지난 4일 시청 5층 상황실에서 진주시, 진주 K-기업가정신재단 등과 상호 협력을 위한 다자간 양해각서를 맺었다. 협약식에는 조규일 진주시장, 스튜어트 레이필드 총장, 김종욱 진주 K-기업가정신재단 회장 등이 참석해 K-기업가정신의 확산을 위한 협력체제 구축과 양 도시 간 교류를 통한 발전의 필요성에 공감하며 뜻을 모았다.
협약의 주요 내용은 ▲K-기업가정신 세계적 확산 교류 협력 ▲K-기업가정신 포럼·컨퍼런스 개최 협력 및 참가 ▲양 도시의 교육, 문화, 산업 등 홍보 ▲우수한 지식 정보 교환 등이다.
스튜어트 레이필드 총장은 “콜럼버스의 기업인과 회사는 섬기는 리더십(Serving leadership)을 회사의 중요한 덕목으로 삼고 있는데 공동체 이익을 중요시하는 이 가치는 진주 K-기업가정신과 상통하는 부분이 있다”며 “이번 방문이 기업가정신에 대해 깊이 배울 수 있는 기회가 될 것”이라고 말했다.
조규일 시장은 “오늘 협약이 진주 K-기업가정신을 세계로 확산하는 계기가 되기를 바란다”며 “오는 10월 개최 예정인 진주 K-기업가정신 국제포럼이 성공적으로 개최될 수 있도록 콜럼버스 주립대에서 적극적으로 참여해 달라”고 당부했다. 김종욱 진주 K-기업가정신재단 회장도 “기업가정신 확산과 기업이 필요로 하는 글로벌 인재 양성을 위해 진주시와 재단, 양 대학이 앞으로 긴밀히 협력하자”고 전했다.
A delegation from Columbus State University (CSU), a four-year public university in Columbus, Georgia, recently visited Jinju, South Korea—officially designated by the Korean Academic Society of Business Administration as “Korea’s Capital of Entrepreneurial Spirit.”
This marks the second consecutive year of CSU’s engagement with Jinju. Following a 2023 visit in which more than 20 CSU faculty and students explored entrepreneurial education at the Jinju K-Entrepreneurship Center, this year’s delegation returned for a two-day visit from June 4 to 5. The group included CSU President Dr. Stuart Rayfield, Chief Operating Officer Patrick Donahoe, Executive Director of Center for Global Engagement Dr. Eric Spears, Dr. Daewoo Lee along with other faculty members and students—demonstrating continued commitment to global collaboration.
On June 4, CSU representatives participated in a multilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony at Jinju City Hall, alongside officials from Jinju City and the Jinju K-Entrepreneurship Foundation. Mayor Kyoo-Il Cho, President Rayfield, and Foundation Chairman Jong-Wook Kim signed the agreement, pledging to expand cooperation in entrepreneurship and international exchange.
The MOU outlines four key areas of collaboration:
- Global promotion and development of K-Entrepreneurship
- Joint participation in K-Entrepreneurship forums and conferences
- Mutual promotion of education, culture, and industry in both cities
- Exchange of high-quality knowledge and information
President Rayfield noted, “Entrepreneurs and businesses in Columbus embrace ‘servant leadership’ as a fundamental value. This emphasis on serving the community closely aligns with the spirit of Jinju’s K-Entrepreneurship. Our visit has provided a meaningful opportunity to better understand and learn from this innovative model.”
Mayor Cho added, “Today’s agreement marks a meaningful step in spreading Jinju’s K-Entrepreneurship philosophy around the world. We look forward to Columbus State University’s active participation in the upcoming K-Entrepreneurship Global Forum scheduled for October.
