전남대는 지난 6월 4일 CSU 총장단을 본교로 초청해 공식 방문 행사를 개최했다고 11일 밝혔다. 이날 행사는 전남대 국제협력과 주관으로 진행됐으며, CSU 측에서는 스튜어트 레이필드(Stuart Rayfield) 총장을 비롯해 패트릭 도너휴 최고운영책임자(Patrick Donahoe), 에릭 스피어스 국제처장(Dr. Eric Spears), 이대우 정책학 부교수(Dr. Daewoo Lee), 전경선 영어학 교수(Dr. Kyong Seon Jeon) 등 5명이 참석했다.
전남대에서는 이근배 총장을 비롯해 김양현 교학부총장, 주정민 대학원장, 강의혁 국제협력부처장, 최문홍 도서관장이 함께해 CSU 대표단과 환담을 나누고, 양교 간 지속 가능한 협력 방안을 심도 있게 논의했다.
전남대와 CSU는 2013년 국제교류 협정을 체결한 이래 약 10년 넘게 활발한 인적 교류를 이어오고 있다. 지금까지 CSU에서는 학생 및 교원 73명이 전남대를 방문했으며, 전남대에서는 42명이 CSU에 파견되는 등 양 대학 간의 교류는 수치상으로도 뚜렷한 성과를 보여주고 있다. 최근에는 전남대 음악학과 학생들이 CSU의 피아노 마스터클래스 프로그램에 참여하며 예술·문화 중심의 교류도 심화되고 있다.
이번 방문단에 포함된 전경선 CSU 영어학 교수는 전남대 동문으로, 매년 전남대 국제여름학교에서 강의를 진행하며 후배들과의 교류를 꾸준히 이어오고 있다. 전 교수는 전남대 학생들이 CSU에 파견될 때에도 현지 적응을 돕는 등 동문으로서 각별한 지원을 아끼지 않고 있다.
양교의 음악 분야 교류 또한 활발히 이뤄지고 있다. 지난해 겨울, CSU 피아노 전공 교수이자 세계적인 연주자인 에스터 박(Esther Park) 교수가 전남대를 방문해 마스터클래스와 연주회를 개최하며 전남대 학생들과 깊이 있는 예술적 교감을 나눈 바 있다. 이를 통해 학생들은 세계 수준의 음악 교육을 직접 체험하며 전문성과 역량을 강화할 수 있는 기회를 얻었다.
콜럼버스주립대학교는 미국 조지아주 콜럼버스에 위치한 공립 종합대학으로, 음악·예술 분야에서 탁월한 교육 성과를 자랑한다. 특히 전남대 교류대학 중 유일하게 ‘한국연구소(Korean Institute at Columbus State, KICS)’를 운영하고 있어 학술 및 문화 협력 측면에서도 높은 발전 가능성을 지닌 전략적 파트너로 평가받는다.
On June 4, CNU welcomed the Columbus State University delegation for an official visit, organized by the university’s Office of International Affairs. The delegation included CSU President Dr. Stuart Rayfield, Chief Operating Officer Patrick Donahoe, Executive Director of Center for Global Engagement Dr. Eric Spears, Associate Professor of Public Policy Dr. Daewoo Lee, and Professor of English Linguistics Dr. Kyong Seon Jeon.
CNU President Lee Geun-bae, along with Vice President for Academic Affairs Kim Yang-hyun, Graduate School Dean Joo Jung-min, Associate Vice President for International Affairs Kang Eui-hyuk, and Library Director Choi Moon-hong, hosted the meeting. The two universities held in-depth discussions on strengthening long-term and sustainable collaboration.
Since establishing a formal academic exchange agreement in 2013, CNU and CSU have maintained an active partnership for over a decade. To date, 73 CSU students and faculty members have visited CNU, while 42 members from CNU have participated in CSU programs. The partnership has recently expanded into the arts, with students from CNU’s Department of Music participating in CSU’s renowned Piano Masterclass Program.
A key figure in the partnership is Dr. Kyong Seon Jeon, a CNU alumna and linguistics professor at CSU. She lectures annually at CNU’s International Summer School and plays an essential role in mentoring and supporting CNU students studying abroad at CSU.
Artistic exchanges between the two institutions are also thriving. Last winter, internationally acclaimed pianist and CSU professor Esther Park visited CNU to conduct a masterclass and recital, offering students a rare opportunity to experience world-class music education firsthand.
Columbus State University is known for its excellence in music and the arts. Among CNU’s international partners, CSU stands out as the only institution operating a “Korean Institute at Columbus State (KICS),” highlighting its commitment to Korean studies and cultural collaboration.
